Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JULY 26, 2011) - Andy Wilkins belted two home runs in consecutive innings on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark and Juan Silverio was a triple shy of the cycle as Winston-Salem downed Kinston 9-2. The two combined to drive in seven of the nine Winston runs, and the Dash pulled to within 2.5 games of the Indians for first place in the Southern Division.
The Dash (16-15, 48-53) piled on early runs against Indians starter Brett Brach. In the second inning, Ian Gac led off with a single, and moved to second when Mike Blanke walked. Nick Ciolli then singled in Gac before Silverio belted his first home run with Winston-Salem to put the Dash up 4-0. The Dash have scored three or more runs in an inning in four of the five games on this home stand and are 4-0 in those games.
The scoring would continue for the Dash, even after Tyler Holt doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Adam Abraham in the third. In the bottom of the same inning, Jared Mitchell walked to start the frame and advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw by Brach. Andy Wilkins then singled to drive home Mitchell.
Winston kept piling on into the later stages of the ballgame. In the fourth, Silverio started with a double and came around to score when Daniel Wagner singled to center field to extend the Dash lead to 6-1.
Wilkins led off the fifth with a home run against Brach, and homered again in the sixth inning against reliever Trey Haley. The second long ball was a two-run shot, as Mitchell doubled before Wilkins batted.
Kinston (18-12, 56-43) got one more on a solo home run by Jeremie Tice, but couldn't get the offense going against Cameron Bayne and Orlando Santos. Bayne (9-4) got the win after allowing two runs (all earned) on five hits over seven innings. Brach (6-7) was hit with the loss after he gave up eight runs (seven earned) in 5.2 innings. Santos threw two scoreless, hitless innings of relief in the ballgame.
Winston-Salem and Kinston get underway at noon on Wednesday for game three of the four-game series. RHP Jake Petricka (1-4, 5.48) looks for his second straight win with the Dash against RHP Marty Popham (4-0, 3.32)
