Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. - Defenseman Kevin Gibson and forwards Justin Kovacs and Nathan Todd have been added to the Quad City Mallards' preseason roster after being released from training camp by the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves, the Mallards announced today.
Gibson, 26, scored once and added eight assists while recording a plus/minus rating of +1 in 50 games with the Mallards as a rookie last season. The 6-foot, 175-pound Grosse Pointe, Michigan, native was named to the 2014-15 Division III All-American first team and was voted Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year after leading defensemen nationwide in points (32) as a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Kovacs, 24, scored six goals and collected 23 assists for 29 points in 63 games with the Kalamazoo Wings last season before producing five points (two goals and three assists) in six playoff games. The 5-foot-11-inch, 193-pound native of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, broke into professional hockey with the Wings late in the 2014-15 season, scoring once and notching four assists in eight games. Kovacs turned pro after scoring 23 times, registering 53 assists and totaling 76 points in 129 games over four seasons at Western Michigan University.
Todd, 20, made his professional debut late last season with the American Hockey League's Binghamton Senators, for whom he played seven games. The 6-foot, 194-pound Kemptville, Ontario native scored 17 goals, recorded 33 assists and totaled 50 points in 53 games while spending the bulk of last season with the Ontario Hockey League's Ottawa 67's.
With the arrival of Gibson, Kovacs and Todd, a total of four players who signed with the Mallards in the offseason have exited Wolves training camp this weekend to join the Mallards. Rookie forward Alexander Taulien was added to the Mallards' training camp roster yesterday after skating in Chicago's camp.
