Jackals Shut out Royals to Close Preseason
October 9, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release
ELMIRA, NY - October 8, 2016 - Tyler Parks stopped all 32 shots he faced and the Elmira Jackals (3-0-0-0) shut out the Reading Royals (0-2-0-0), 6-0, Saturday night at First Arena in their final exhibition game of the season . The Jackals closed the preseason with three wins in three games.
After beating the Royals the night before, Elmira carried that momentum into Saturday's game, grabbing an early 1-0 lead on the Royals. With the Jackals on the power play and with a delayed penalty being called against Reading, Jackals forward Todd Christian scored on a wraparound from behind the net. The goal, coming at 10:11 of the first, was assisted by Ian Young and was Christian's first of the preseason.
Christian and the Jackals weren't done, as they built on their 1-0 lead in the second period. He received a pass from Steven Kaunisto and snapped a shot in from the slot at 6:13 of the second to give the Jackals a 2-0 lead, with Kaunisto and Zach Luczyk getting the assists. Later in the period, Luczyk added his third of the preseason by burying a rebound near the left circle with six minutes to play in the second. Christian set up Joel Wetmore for the initial shot and Luczyk scored for a 3-0 lead. Ryan Wilkinson scored on a wrist shot from the point with under a minute left in the second to give the Jackals a 4-0 lead entering the third period.
The Jackals continued to pour it on in the third, with Luczyk once again in the middle of the action. Just over halfway through the third, the rookie forward picked up the puck and skated across the slot, shooting one past goalie Martin Ouellette at 11:10 for his second goal of the night to give the Jackals a 5-0 lead. Defenseman Chris Joseph capped the scoring for Elmira with a rebound goal at 15:42, depositing a loose puck after Charlie Mosey sent a shot toward the net.
Notes: Tyler Parks made 32 saves, including 15 in the second period, to earn his first professional shutout. Luczyk was involved in a fight late in the third, giving him a Gordie Howe Hat Trick with two goals, an assist and a fight in the score sheet. It was he second multi-goal game of the preseason. The Jackals outscored Reading 9-1 in the two-game preseason series and outscored their opponents 13-3 in all three preseason games.
