Pensacola Pelicans News Release
Trino Aguilar came into Sunday's game against Sioux City with 107 hits, tied with Andy Wilson's single season record set in 2004. Aguilar wasted no time breaking the record and hit a single between the shortstop and third basemen, leading off the bottom of the first. Aguilar's night was far from over as the All-Star third baseman went 3-5 and drove in five runs. It would not be all smiles and sunshine for the Pelicans who would end up losing a heart breaker as the Explorers came from behind, scoring three times in their last at-bat, winning 6-5.
In the bottom of the second Pensacola had four players reach base, and they would all cross the plate to give the Pelicans a 4-0 lead. George Branch led off the inning with a walk and Rolo Avila followed with a single, one out later Andrew Salvo drew a walk to load the bases. With two outs Trino Aguilar delivered a shot that landed in the left field beer garden for a grandslam.
The Sioux City Explorers would start to chip away at the Pelican lead in the third inning when Alex Llanos drove in JJ Burress. They would go on to add runs in the fourth and sixth innings, cutting the Pelican lead to one run. Burress drove in Robert Mendoza in the fourth and catcher Chris Grossman hit a solo homerun in the sixth.
The Pelicans extended their lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth as Bo Brown hit a double and then was followed by Aguilar, who continued his hot night by hitting a double that brought Brown in to score. Aguilar tallied his fifth RBI of the night on his third hit and finished the game a triple short of the cycle.
Bubba Dobson and Carl Scheafer came in to relieve starter Todd Androsko and both were effective throwing a combined two innings and allowing only two hits. Tony Pierce got the ball in the ninth and found himself in a little trouble as the first three batters he faced reached base. After getting JJ Burress to pop out to left field, center fielder Zach Pace hit a controversial ground rule double down the left field line scoring two and tying the game. The ball looked as if it hit the ground just to the left of third base, which would have been a foul ball instead it was a game tying double. Jorge Moreno had an RBI single that scored Billy Kippinger and gave the Explorers a 6-5 lead.
The Pelicans threatned in the bottom of the ninth as Tim Dorn walked and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. He would not get farther than that though as the Pelicans fell 5-6.
