Fort Worth Cats News Release
The Cats scored eight times in the fifth inning en route to 14-5 win over El Paso Sunday night at LaGrave Field.
The win, the Cats' fourth in a row, reduced the magic number for clinching a playoff spot to two as Coastal Bend lost to Shreveport on Sunday.
Leading 5-1 going to the fifth, the Cats scored eight times on seven hits to break the game wide open. Terence Green, who had two hits in the game, had a two-run double in the inning. Marc Mirizzi punctuated the uprising with a three-run homer off reliever Brad Cherry.
Mirizzi was 4-for-4 in the game with three runs batted in. The Cats collected 14 hits in addition to their season-high 14 runs scored.
Ryan Weems (3-8) notched his first win since May 27 with six strong innings. The lefty allowed two runs on six hits while stirking out four and walking three.
Diablos' starter Joslin Ramirez, who was ejected in the fourth inning for throwing a pitch behind Green in protest of an umpire's call, took the loss to drop to 1-5.
Ramirez went 3 1/3 innings and allowed five runs, two earned on five hits. Following the ejection, Ramirez hurled the baseball over the grandstand roof at LaGrave Field and into the parking lot.
The Cats and Diablos play the second game of the series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Joel Kirsten goes for the Cats and righty Robert Wachman will be on the mound for El Paso.
