Kinston Indians News Release
The Pelican's Robert Marcial hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, completing a double header sweep of Kinston Friday night in South Carolina. Marcial's bomb broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the marathon session of baseball ended just before 1 am.
The big hit wasted a great start from Kinston pitcher Russell Young. Young pitched a fantastic game, giving up no runs and five hits in seven innings. Young struck out three and walked one. Kinston's offense disappeared as the K-Tribe managed just three hits in game two.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Pelicans leadoff man Gerry Rodriguez reached base on a catcher's interference call charged to Kinston catcher Doug Pickens. After a sacrifice bunt pushed Rodriguez to second base, Randy Gress struck out. After a two-out, intentional walk to the Pelican's Chris Shehan, Robert Marcial took the first pitch over the wall in left field. It was his third home run of the season, given Myrtle Beach a 3-0 victory. David Roberts (0-3) took the loss for Kinston.
Kinston lost game one of a double header 6-2. The game was disrupted by rain, causing more than an hour delay in the bottom of the fifth inning. Myrtle Beach got to Kinston ace Eric Berger in the bottom of the first inning, when Michael Fisher singled, Donell Linares doubled and Gerry Rodriguez drove them both home with a two RBI single. The Pelicans would take a 3-0 lead, when Chris Shehan led off the bottom of the second inning with a double the came home on an RBI single by Cole Miles. Kinston's defense let Berger down in the fourth inning, when two errors led to two unearned run thanks to RBI hits from Cole Miles and Michael Fisher. Berger (7-8) was saddled with the loss, pitching four innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits. Berger did not walk a batter and struck out two. In Berger's seven losses, the K-Tribe has scored a total of three earned runs while he was on the mound.
The K-Tribe would get on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Tim Fedroff hit a two-run home run, his fourth homer of the season. Myrtle Beach extended the lead with a solo home run by Chris Shehan. Kinston tried to comeback in the top of the seventh, loading the bases thanks to two walks and an error, but Doug Pickens grounded out to end the game. Lucas Montero had a big first game for Kinston, going 2-for-2 with two doubles, a run scored and two walks. Pelican starter Eric Cordier picked up the win for Myrtle Beach.
The K-Tribe will take on Myrtle Beach for game three of the four game set Saturday night at 7:05 pm in South Carolina. Alexander Perez will take the hill for Kinston.
