Hill City Howlers News Release
Lynchburg and Frederick split the first two games of a four-game set at City Stadium Friday night. Frederick won the opener, a completion of Thursday night's suspended game, 10-6. The Hillcats won the second game 3-1. The two teams will meet at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.
Thursday's game resumed shortly after 6 p.m. Friday with Frederick leading 2-1 with Brandon Waring at first base and no outs in the top of the fourth. The Keys scored two more runs in the inning off Lynchburg's Paul Mildren. Caleb Joseph roped a double to left field to give the Keys runners at second and third. Tyler Henson followed with a two-run double that gave Frederick a 4-1 edge.
The offensive onslaught continued an inning later when Frederick posted five more runs. After Brandon Waring drew a two-out walk, Joseph smacked a two-run home run off Mildren, who was subsequently lifted for Mike Colla. Henson doubled off Colla and scored on an RBI single by Ryan Adams. Colla surrendered a two-run home run to Wally Crancer, which gave the Keys a commanding 9-1 advantage.
The Cats responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 9-4 contest before Frederick tacked on a run in the sixth.
Trailing 10-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Lynchburg scored twice when Jared Keel delivered a two-run single. Joe Esposito recovered and retired Eric Fryer on a force out to seal the Frederick victory. Brian Parker (4-0) picked up the win for Frederick while Bryan Morris (2-6) was charged with the loss. Esposito earned his second save for the Keys.
Lynchburg answered by winning the 7-inning nightcap 3-1. Cats starter Justin Wilson and Frederick's Sean Gleason were locked in a pitchers' duel for most of the contest. The two starters each tossed four scoreless innings to begin the game.
The Cats broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. Erik Huber singled to start the inning and went from first to third on Eric Fryer's single. Eddie Prasch drew a walk from Gleason to load the bases. Jose De Los Santos hit a chopper through the hole on the right side that plated Huber and Fryer.
De Los Santos took second when Gleason's pickoff throw skipped over the railing and into the crowd behind the visitor's bullpen. After Gleason was replaced, De Los Santos stole third and Alex Presley hit an RBI single off Jake Stevens that put Lynchburg in front 3-0.
Wilson (5-6) equaled his career-high by pitching six innings. He allowed three hits and no runs to earn the victory. R. J. Rodriguez allowed one hit and one run in the top of the seventh, but completed the frame with no further damage and picked up his league-leading 20th save. Gleason (2-5) took the loss.
Lynchburg will take Frederick in the third game of the four-game series at City Stadium Saturday. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m.
