Potomac Nationals News Release
July 31, 2009 -- 7:05 p.m. G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium - Woodbridge, Virginia Game #102/Home #48
TODAY: The battle of the best two clubs in the Carolina League continues with game two of four from Pftizner Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. With last night's thrilling win, the P-Nats have tied up the season-series 7-7 but the Dash still own a winning record here in Woodbridge (4-3) entering tonight's second game. For the second time this week, the P-Nats will turn to a young starter who will be making his Carolina League debut as Washington 3rd round pick from this past June's draft, Trevor Holder, gets the ball for Potomac this evening. On Wednesday, Brad Peacock struck out nine over 5.2 innings to help the P-Nats take two of three from Myrtle Beach.
TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: RHP Anthony Carter, 23, was the 26th round selection of the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 Draft out of Georgia Perimeter College in Dacatur, Georgia. Carter split time last season between Low-A Kannapolis and Winston-Salem compiling a record of 11-7 with a 3.99 ERA in 28G/27GS. The right-hander held South Atlantic League opponents to a .213 batting average against and he struck out 66 batters in 61.2 innings with the Intimidators. Carter attended Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia. Other notable alumni from Parkview include New York Mets OF Jeff Francouer and current New Orleans Saints offensive lineman Jon Stinchcomb.
Carter enters tonight's second game with the P-Nats as the only 10-game winner in the Carolina League and he's also coming in hot having won four straight starts and is 8-1 in his last 13 outings. He's a perfect 4-0 in the month of July and has not tasted defeat since June 21 when he allowed one run over 6.0 innings in a start against Wilmington. Against the P-Nats, Carter is 1-2 with a 8.78 ERA with his last appearance coming way back on June 11. In that outing, the Dash ace silenced the Potomac bats allowing just one run on two hits and five strikeouts in a 2-1 victory for Winston-Salem. The righty did allow three earned runs on four hits while striking out seven over 5.0 innings in a 3-2 loss to the P-Nats during Potomac's Middle School Math Day game at 10:30 a.m. on April 21. The Nats really lowered the hammer on Carter in Winston-Salem on May 8th when he got tagged for nine runs on 10 hits including four Potomac homers in a 12-4 pounding of the Dash. His 12 home runs allowed are the second most in the Carolina League.
