Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

TROY, NY --- Michael Feliz allowed one run on one hit with nine strikeouts over five innings and D'Andre Toney hit a three-run homer to lead the Tri-City ValleyCats to an 8-2 New York-Penn League victory on Wednesday night at Bruno Stadium and a three-game sweep of the 2013 opening series against the Vermont Lake Monsters.

Vermont took a 1-0 lead in the second on a hit batter, walk, single and bases loaded walk to force home a run. But Feliz got out of the inning without further trouble as Chris Wolfe hit into a innning-ending 6-4-3 double play. Tri-City quickly took the lead in the bottom of the second off Lake Monsters starter Jerad Grundy, who also hit a batter and allowed three singles to tie the game at one before a Toney sacrifice fly gave the ValleyCats the lead.

Then in the fourth after back-to-back singles to leadoff the inning off reliever Matt Stalcup, Toney smacked a three-run homer to leftfield to give Tri-City a 6-1 lead. The ValleyCats added two more runs in the sixth off Cristhian Perez before Vermont got its second run of the contest in the seventh as Ryan Gorton was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Wolfe RBI single to centerfield.

Three Tri-City pitchers held Vermont to just five hits on the night, while striking out 13 Lake Monsters. Michael Martinez was 3-for-4 with two runs and Dan Gulbransen 2-for-3 for the ValleyCats, who scored 26 runs in the three-game sweep of Vermont. Grundy (0-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits in 1 2/3 innings for the loss, while Perez gave up two runs in three innings of relief.

Vermont is 0-3 to start the season for the first time since 2005 and for the sixth time in team history. The Lake Monsters have also lost six straight games at Tri-City and eight of their last 10 games at Bruno Stadium dating back to the beginning of the 2012 season.

The Lake Monsters will try to get into the win column on Thursday when they host the Connecticut Tigers at 7:05 pm in their home opener at historic Centennial Field as Vermont begins a year-long celebration of its 20th anniversary season.  Thursday's home opener will also see Vermont welcome its 2-millionth fan to Centennial Field all-time and the Lake Monsters will celebrate by giving away thousands of dollars in prizes throughout the night to fans in attendance.
