Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
NILES, Ohio-Two nights of baseball have passed in the Mahoning Valley, and the Scrappers aren't just looking for their first win, they're also looking for their first run of the 2013 season.
Things looked promising in the 1st inning, as back-to-back singles by Scrappers' hitters Claudio Bautista and Juan Herrera put runners at 1st and 2nd base. Jamestown starter Colten Brewer walked right fielder Josh McAdams to load the bases. However, Paul Hendrix, making his Scrappers debut, grounded in to an inning ending double play.
Another Scrapper, starting pitcher Caleb Hamrick, dazzled the Eastwood Field faithful, retiring the first 12 batters he faced to start the ballgame. However, in the 5th inning, the Jamestown bats finally got to the young righty. With one crack of the bat, Jammers catcher Jin-De Jhang drilled a ball into the blue Niles sky to put Jamestown in front 1-0.
After two singles, a sacrifice bunt, and a throwing error by Hamrick, the Jammers lead was extended to two. In the 6th, with Alexis Paredes now pitching for the Scrappers, a ball in the dirt would kick off catcher Martin Cervenka and roll to the backstop, which resulted in another Jammer run.
Scrapper fans held their breath in the 8th, as a Josh McAdams walk, a double by Paul Hendrix, his first professional base hit, and a Nellie Rodriguez walk loaded the bases for Mahoning Valley. Nevertheless, Cervenka was retired on a pop up to end the inning. The bats remained silent in the bottom of the 9th to preserve the 3-0 Jamestown victory.
Jammers right-handed starter Colten Brewer was awarded the win. He pitched 5 innings of shutout baseball, allowing 5 hits, a walk and struck out two to get his first victory of the season. Cesar Lopez earned the save for Jamestown. The loss is credited to Caleb Hamrick, who pitched 5 innings, allowed two runs, one earned, striking out 5 batters on the night.
The Scrappers will try again Wednesday at Eastwood Field, playing the final contest of their three game opening series against Jamestown. First pitch will be at 7:05pm. Call the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000 to get your tickets.
