Scrappers Literally Walk Off for First Win

Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
NILES, Ohio-The thrills and excitement that had eluded the Mahoning Valley in the first two contests of 2013 filled Eastwood Field Wednesday night. Carrying a streak of 18 scoreless innings to start the new campaign, more than 30 dating back to 2012, the Scrappers were looking to get going offensively.
A 4th inning that saw six Jammers cross home plate left the fans at Eastwood Field deflated. However, the Scrappers finally ended the scoreless streak, off a base hit by 3rd baseman Claudio Bautista. Mahoning Valley got that run, then another, then another, and just like that, the Scrappers had climbed all the way back to cut the lead to 6-5.
A Jammers bullpen that had quieted Scrappers bats all series failed to find the strike zone, walking seven batters, and hitting six more. Those control issues followed the Jamestown bullpen into the 8th, as a Juan Herrera walk by Jammers reliever Axel Diaz scored the tying run, to even the game at six runs apiece.
Then in the 9th, with the bases loaded right fielder Juan Romero, who struck out 70 times a season ago in short season play, capitalized on the lack of control of Diaz. He drew a four-pitch walk, bringing the winning run home and the Eastwood Field faithful to their feet as the Scrappers walk off a winner 7-6.
Manuel Carmona earns the victory for Mahoning Valley, pitching an inning of scoreless relief in the 9th. Jammers hurler Axel Diaz is charged with the blown save and the loss, as he allowed two runs on five walks and a hit batsman.
The Scrappers now go on the road for three at Batavia, before returning home Sunday against Auburn. Call the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000 to get your tickets.
