-SPIKES BACK HOME FOR SAWBUCK SERIES MATCHUP: The State College Spikes come back home looking to take the opening series of the 2013 season from the Williamsport Crosscutters (Philadelphia Phillies) as the two teams return to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Spikes last won a season series against Williamsport outright in 2006, when they took eight of 12 meetings from the âCutters. The all-time series currently stands at 47-39, Williamsport, with State College holding a 23-20 edge in games played at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
-LAST NIGHT: The Spikes went to extra innings for the first time since 2007 with the Crosscutters, but a four-run explosion in the 11th frame gave the Spikes a 7-3 victory at Historic Bowman Field. David Washington had they key hit in the 11th with a two-run double as eight hitters came to the plate for State College in the game-winning rally. Cesar Valera went 4-for-6 with the RBI single that brought in what proved to be the game-winning run in the 11th inning. Luke Voit went 2-for-4 in his professional debut. The Spikes struck out 12 hitters as a staff as Chris Perry started and pitched four strong innings in his pro debut and Jeff Rauh tossed two scoreless innings for the win.
-REED TO START MOUND PARADE FOR SPIKES TONIGHT: Left-hander Jimmy Reed, the sixth-round draft choice of the Cardinals in 2013, makes his first professional pitching appearance as he starts for State College tonight. Reed recorded the eighth-best ERA in the ACC for Maryland this year as a starter, and tied for the second-most saves in a single season in Terrapins history in 2012. Reed will be followed on the mound by righty Kevin Herget in a "piggyback" role. Herget, the Cards' 39th-round pick in the draft this year out of Kean University in New Jersey, where he led them to the NCAA Division II Championship tourney.
-WARNER GOES BACK TO THE HILL FOR CROSSCUTTERS: Right-hander Joshua Warner will get the ball for Williamsport tonight. Warner has already faced the Spikes twice in his pro career, with both occasions occurring last year. The Queensland, Australia native earned the win on June 18, 2012 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park with six shutout innings, but was nicked for six runs, five earned, over five innings in a loss to State College on July 19, 2012 at Historic Bowman Field. Warner started this season with full-season Single-A Lakewood, going 1-3 with a 7.50 ERA in six starts totaling 24 innings.
-SPIKES HONOR ONE MILLIONTH FAN: Monday night, the State College Spikes kicked off the Year of the Millionth Fan in grand style by honoring the one-millionth fan in team history. After whittling down the Opening Night crowd of 5,155 throughout the night, William Kenyon of State College emerged as the Spikes' Millionth Fan in a post-game ceremony, winning a one-of-a-kind Spikes prize package
-SPIKE MARKS: With last night's win, the Spikes are 5-0 against the Crosscutters in extra-inning games, including three wins in 2006...Mark DeJohn, the Spikes' manager in the inaugural season of 2006, is with the team for the opening series of the year in his role as Cardinals' minor league field coordinator
