Tri-City Comes up Short in Pitchers' Duel
July 27, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Tri-City Dust Devils News Release
The Tri-City Dust Devils lost their first home series in the month of July, losing the series finale to the Spokane Indians 2-1 Thursday night at Gesa Stadium. Despite eight hits on the night, Tri-City was able to push just one run across the plate and dropped to 8-9 in one-run games this season.
After both teams scored early, with a run apiece in the first inning, the offenses struggled to turn base runners into runs. Four of the Dust Devils' (1-2 second half, 19-22 overall) eight hits came from the duo of first baseman Miguel De Leon and catcher Tom Murphy, each of whom went 2-for-4 on the night. De Leon drove in the lone Dust Devils run on the night in the first inning. The game-deciding run for the Indians (2-1, 14-27) came in the sixth inning, off of Dust Devils starting pitcher Peter Tago, when designated hitter Joe Maloney singled home third baseman Ryan Rua to give Spokane the 2-1 lead.
Tri-City starting pitcher Tago (2-5) had another quality outing, but failed to get the run support to prevent himself from taking the loss, his fifth of the season. Tago threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking none. Relievers Josh Slaats and Mike Wolford combined to work the final 2 1/3 innings, not allowing a run.
Spokane starting pitcher John Kukuruda allowed one run, unearned, on three hits over four innings on the mound. Righty Eric Brooks (2-1) earned his second win of the year, throwing four shutout innings of relief for the Indians.
The Dust Devils hit the road for two three game road series before returning to Gesa Stadium on August 3rd to begin another eight game homestand. Tri-City starts that homestand with a three-game set versus the Yakima Bears which is followed by a five-game series with the defending Northwest League Champion Vancouver Candians. The Dust Devils take on the Boise Hawks Friday night in Boise. First pitch is at 6:15 p.m. and you can catch all the action live on NewsTalk 870 AM KFLD or online at www.dustdevilsbaseball.com.
