Fifth shutout win for Bears in 2012
The Yakima Bears shut out the Boise Hawks 1-0 Thursday at Memorial Stadium in Boise, Idaho. The victory was the fifth shutout for the Bears and gave the Bears a 2-1 series win against the Hawks.
Both starting pitchers were stellar on the night. Hawks starter Jose Arias tossed a season-long six innings without giving up a run. In the seventh Arias returned to the mound, hit lead-off batter Shaun Cooper, and exited the game after being ejected. Cooper advanced to second on a wild pitch by the new Hawks hurler and scored on a double from Jimmy Comerota.
Bears starting pitcher Blake Perry topped the effort by Arias with ease. Perry tossed eight shutout innings, allowing only four hits and one walk while fanning five batters. All of hits by the Hawks were singles, but Perry did hit two batters and throw one wild pitch. Perry improved to 3-0 on the season and now has a 1.76 ERA after 46 innings of work this season in the Northwest League. Behind Perry, Enrique Burgos worked around several base runners in the ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.
Both teams had five hits, but three of the Bears hits were doubles. Comerota went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and the run batted in. Mark Ginther went 2-for-3 with both hits being doubles.
The Bears continue the six-game road trip with the first of three games in Spokane Friday night. First pitch between the Bears and Indians is scheduled for 6:35. Bears right-handed pitcher Derrick Stultz is scheduled to make his first professional start, while right-handed pitcher CJ Edwards is the probable pitcher for Spokane.
