Superb Pitching Lead Sox over Volcanoes, 4-1
July 27, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Everett AquaSox News Release
EVERETT, Wash. -Stellar pitching by starter Scott DeCecco and reliever Marcos Reyna led the AquaSox over the Volcanoes, 4-1, Thursday night at Everett Memorial Stadium. Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers was in attendance to throw out the ceremonial first pitch and sign autographs.
DeCecco (1-1, 3.86 ERA) was spectacular in his third start of the year, earning his first win as a professional. The Mariners' 21st-round pick in this year's draft struck out nine batters in 5.2 innings of work, and gave up just one run on three hits and two walks.
Reyna picked up right where DeCecco left off as the right-hander didn't allow a hit and struck out four in the remaining 3.1 innings to earn the save.
On the offensive side of the ball, Ketel Marte knocked in the first run of the game with a single to center field in the fourth inning. Taylor Ard soon followed with his sixth home run of the season to plate Marte and put the Sox ahead 3-0 after four innings of play.
Salem-Keizer scored their lone run of the game in the top of the sixth when the leadoff walk came around to score on a double by shortstop Matt Duffy, narrowing the lead to 3-1.
The Frogs got an insurance run in the ninth to win the third game of the series, 4-1. Everett has yet to lose a series at home this season.
The AquaSox continue their homestand Friday with a three-game series against the Vancouver Canadians. Left-hander Rusty Shellhorn (1-0, 4.09 ERA) will be on the bump for the Sox with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
