Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Orlando Mercado's safety squeeze pushed the winning run home in a 3-2 victory for the Rockland Boulders over the Worcester Tornadoes Saturday night at Provident Bank Park. Alex Trezza hit two homers for the second night in a row in the loss, providing the only Worcester offense.
Both Zach Zuercher and Pat Moran allowed just two runs in their eight innings of work, neither receiving a decision in the Tornadoes' second extra inning game of the year. (The other was a 5-3 win, also in 11 innings, at the Quebec Capitales.)
Garrett Johnson and Adrian Martin (the eventual winner) combined for three scoreless innings in relief of Moran, while Kyle Regnault dropped to (0-4) on the year with 2.1 innings out of the pen for the visitors. Regnault walked two and allowed just one hit, but it was a lead-off double for Ryan Scoma in the eleventh.
Matt Nandin had a successful sacrifice bunt (the second of the game for Rockland and the third in the contest overall) to put Scoma 90 feet from home before Regnault intentionally walked Jon Smith to get to Mercado. Orlando had been 0-for-4 with three strikeouts (all against Zach Zuercher) entering his at-bat, but left with the game-winning RBI on an attempted sacrifice directed at Nick Salotti.
Trezza hit two homers for the second game in a row, hitting a solo shot in the fourth each night. He had a grand slam in the fifth Friday, and added another one-run homer in the seventh Saturday. Each of his homers in the middle game of the series gave the Tornadoes a lead, but each time the Boulders used a deep fly ball to tie it (with sacrifice flies).
Rockland tied it at one apiece with Keith Brachold's sac fly to plate Qualon Millender (who had tripled) in the sixth, and made it a 2-2 score in the eighth with the deep fly by Ryan Mollica (with Chris Valencia crossing the plate).
The rubber game of the three-contest set is Sunday at 2:00pm, with the Tornadoes trying to avoid losing their third series in as many tries against the Boulders. Tornadoes Pre-Game Live begins at 1:50 on USTREAM.tv.
