MUSKEGON, Mich. - A four-goal second period rode the Muskegon Lumberjacks to victory as they defeated the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders by a final score of 4-to-2 on Friday, Dec. 3 from Mercy Health Arena in downtown Muskegon. Phil Tresca scored a pair of goals for the Lumberjacks, with other lamplighters coming from Ethan Whitcomb and Parker Lindauer to double up the Riders in the first game of a three-game weekend series.
1st Period
Cedar Rapids, the most penalized team in the USHL, got in front by a goal from Logan Morrell at 5:18 of the opening period after a backhand shot beat Lumberjacks goaltender Cameron Korpi. Carson Peters and Grant Ahcan picked up assists to make it a 1-to-0 score in favor of the RoughRiders.
At the conclusion of 20 minutes, the Riders carried a 1-to-0 lead into the dressing room for the first intermission.
2nd Period
Muskegon's Phil Tresca clocked in the Jacks' first goal at 23 seconds into the second period, as Mercy Health Arena erupted into an avalanche of teddy bears being tossed onto the ice for Teddy Bear Toss. Tresca's goal was assisted by Jack Williams to tie the game a one apiece.
Tresca would add another at 2:03 of the middle frame, giving Muskegon the 2-to-1 lead. Jacob Guevin and Quinn Hutson would earn assists on Tresca's second goal of the game.
At 7:09 of the period, Ethan Whitcomb would push the Muskegon lead to 3-to-1 with his third goal of the season. David Hymovitch and Jake Braccini would add assists.
Just 26 seconds later, Parker Lindauer would score his second goal as a Muskegon Lumberjack and increase the lead to 4-to-1. Tyler Hotson and Jacob Guevin would pick up helpers at 7:37 of the second period.
But the RoughRiders would claw back within two, after a goal from Nate Hanley at 16:39 of the second period. Cole Burtch and Zaccharaya Wisdom would get helpers to make it a 4-to-2 game, still in favor of the Lumberjacks.
After two periods of play, the Lumberjacks controlled a 4-to-2 lead into the second intermission.
3rd Period
Both teams endured plenty of chances, but the nets stayed empty in the final period with no teams lighting the lamp.
In the end, the Lumberjacks earned their eighth victory of the season and banked two points in the Eastern Conference standings, leapfrogging the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders by a final score of 4-to-2.
