Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks trailed early but not for long on Friday, launching the new month with a 5-2 home ice victory at Young Arena against the Sioux Falls Stampede.
Relative to their season scoring averages, Waterloo and Sioux Falls had almost a game's worth of offense in the opening 20 minutes. The Stampede started the flurry just 1:14 into the matchup when Garrett Pinoniemi zipped into the offensive end and rifled a shot into the net from the right circle.
Waterloo leveled the count before the game was five minutes old. At 4:35, Garrett Schifsky attempted a wraparound. Although he couldn't complete it, the puck was left free for James Hong to bang in from the top of the crease.
Not quite three minutes later, the Hawks went to the lead. Michael LaStarza created the opportunity from just beyond the post to the right of Isak Posch. With the puck fluttering through midair, John Waldron and Gavin O'Connell were both swinging at it; O'Connell got the last touch to knock it between the pipes.
However, the game went to the first intermission tied at 2-2 after J.P. Turner's wraparound goal at 15:12.
The second period included just one goal, and it pushed the Black Hawks to the lead for good. LaStarza tied up the puck behind the Sioux Falls net, giving Waldron the opportunity to pull it free and snap a pass diagonally across the slot. Coming up from the left point, Tucker Shedd didn't hesitate, swatting a shot into the net as soon as Waldron's feed arrived.
The third period - and ultimately the game - was settled on special teams. Early penalties on Tucker Ness and Owen Baker overlapped by more than a minute, giving the Stampede a two-man advantage. For the seventh time during nine two-man shorthanded situations this season, Waterloo came through unscathed.
Minutes later, the Hawks were on the power play and capitalized. At 8:04, Tyler Procious sent an attempt from the right point through traffic and past Posch, inside the post to the netminder's left.
Another long short produced a second Black Hawks power play goal with 2:39 left in the game. Ness' one-timer from the deep slot was tipped in by Schifsky just outside the crease, giving Waterloo the 5-2 margin.
The Hawks outshot the Stampede in each period and by a final count of 27-17. Emmett Croteau snagged the win with 15 saves.
The same teams meet for an instant rematch Saturday at 6:05 p.m. It's a College Night, with $10 tickets for students with ID. Fans age 21 and over can also enjoy 2-for-1 Bud Light through the end of the first period.
