Stampede's Win Streak Comes to an End in Waterloo

Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Waterloo, IA - The Sioux Falls Stampede started hot, but couldn't hold off the Waterloo Black Hawks as they fell 5-2 Friday night at Young Arena. Garrett Pinoniemi and JP Turner scored for the Herd while Isak Posch stopped 22 of 27 shots in goal as Sioux Falls saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. The Herd will get another crack at the Black Hawks in a rematch Saturday night.

The Stampede and Black Hawks entered the game as two of the lowest scoring teams in the league, but it sure didn't look that way through the first 20 minutes. Fresh off the bus, the Stampede got rolling early when Garrett Pinoniemi tallied his sixth of the season just 1:14 in. Pinoniemi raced into the Waterloo zone on a 3-on-1 and wristed a shot from the right circle past Waterloo goaltender Emmett Croteau. The celebration wouldn't last long though as the Hawks responded with two goals of their own at 4:35 and 7:31, both with loose pucks in front of the net. It remained that way until 15:21 when JP Turner took a pass from Blake Humphrey, skated behind the Waterloo net and wrapped the puck through the pads of Croteau to tie the game at two. Waterloo outshot the Stampede 10-7 in the period.

The Herd looked to regain the lead in the second and had two power play chances, but would come up empty. Waterloo regained the lead at 13:56 when Tucker Shedd snuck in all alone inside the left circle and he one-timed a pass from John Waldron and past Isak Posch to make it a 3-2 game. Waterloo outshot the Herd 9-4 in the period.

Sioux Falls had a great opportunity to tie the game in the third when they went on a 5-on-3 power play for 1:05. The Herd held good possession, but only managed one good scoring chance and weren't able to connect on the 5-on-4 advantage either. Just minutes later, the Herd took a penalty themselves and Waterloo took advantage. Tyler Procious took a shot from the right circle that snuck through a screen and under the glove of Posch to make it a 4-2 game. The Stampede took another penalty late and once again the Black Hawks would cash in, this time off the stick of Garrett Schifsky and Waterloo put the game away at 5-2.

Waterloo outshot the 8-6 in the third period and 27-17 on the night. The Black Hawks went 2-for-3 on the power play while the Stampede were 0-for-4.

Sioux Falls will go for the weekend split on Saturday when they face the Black Hawks again at Young Arena. Puck drop is set for 6:05 PM and fans can catch the game live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 105.1-FM, 107.9-FM and KELO.com starting with pre-game coverage at 5:40 PM.
