Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, in their 19th season in the American Hockey League, today announced that the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins have assigned forward Trent Whitfield to Providence, pending a physical, after clearing waivers.
Whitfield, 33, ruptured his Achilles tendon during the 2010 offseason, which had sidelined him indefinitely this year. The veteran was named the P-Bruins' 2009-10 Most Valuable Player after captaining the club and finishing third on the team in scoring with 43 points in 52 games. His 17 goals and 26 assists helped him earn three call-ups to Boston, where he tallied one assist in 16 regular season games. The center also appeared in four postseason contests for the parent Bruins.
The 13th year pro and native of Alameda, Saskatchewan, was signed by Boston to a two-year contract as a free agent on July 13, 2009 after seeing NHL time with Washington, the New York Rangers and St. Louis, along with AHL action for Portland and Peoria.
Whitfield was originally selected by the Bruins 100th overall in round four of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. In his professional career, he has scored 592 points (242g, 360a) in 913 games between the regular season and playoffs.
The P-Bruins' roster is now comprised of 25 players, including 15 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders.
Providence is back at home to host Manchester at 7:05 p.m. tonight for Kids Hat Night with hats free to the first 1,000 kids age 12 and under. The P-Bruins are on the road on Saturday in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at 7:05 p.m. Providence then takes on Binghamton at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Sunday to wrap up the weekend with Thundersticks Night at 4:05 p.m. The thundersticks are free to the first 1,000 kids age 12 and under.
To purchase tickets or for more information, call the Providence Bruins ticket office at (401) 273-5000 or log on to the team website at www.providencebruins.com.
