BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators welcomed a Syracuse Crunch team to town who had not only won their last three games, but had also pulled within four points of the B-Sens in the East Division standings. A pair of third period goals by Erik Condra helped lift the B-Sens to a 6-4 win, haulting the Syracuse win streak to give Binghamton a bit more breathing room in the ranks of the division.
B-Sens leading scorer Corey Locke opened the game's scoring at 5:32 of the first as he buried the rebound off an initial shot by Ryan Keller up and over Crunch net minder Tiemo Pielmeier.
Just over two minutes later, Syracuse's Nate Guenin took a penalty for roughing, giving the B-Sens their first power play of the game. Rookie forward Mike Hoffman was able to capitalize as he blasted a shot into the Crunch goal from the blue line to put the B-Sens ahead by two.
With just over six minutes remaining in the opening period, Frank Lessard's second goal of the season gave the B-Sens a 3-0 advantage heading into intermission.
5:57 into the second period of play Nathan Paetsch's unassisted tally finally put Syracuse on the board. It was the first goal the Crunch had scored against the B-Sens since Oct. 16, putting an end to a scoring drought that spanned five games for 251 minutes, 30 seconds.
Eric Lampe narrowed the scoring gap for the Crunch at 13:56 of the period, beating Barry Brust for his first American Hockey League goal to make the score just 3-2 in favor of Binghamton.
The B-Sens appeared to answer with just 2:48 left in the period. Colin Greening fired a puck into the Crunch net, which then took an odd bounce to the corner boards. The goal light did not go off, but following a lengthy discussion, officials ruled the goal was in, giving Binghamton a 4-2 lead going into the third period. The goal was Greening's third point of the night, as he tallied assists on Locke's and Lessard's goals.
Paetsch and MacGregor Sharp would each go on to register goals for the Crunch in the third period, but a pair of goals by B-Sens' second-year forward Erik Condra helped propel Binghamton to the win.
The B-Sens return to action tomorrow as they host the Rochester Americans. Tickets are $17.75 for side seating, $16.75 for end seating. Fans can purchase tickets at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 in person at the Binghamton Senators' executive office or the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena box office.
