Vancouver Giants News Release
Vancouver, B.C. - For a second straight season a Vancouver Giants goaltender has been selected in the NHL Draft. The Giants are very proud to announce that 2001-born goaltender Trent Miner (Souris, MB) has been selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the seventh round (202nd overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft.
Originally selected by the Vancouver Giants 20th overall in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft, Trent Miner becomes the second Vancouver Giant to be selected this weekend and just the third goaltender ever selected by the Vancouver Giants in the 18-year history of their franchise. Both 2019 Giants draftees (Miner and Bowen Byram) were chosen by Colorado.
Trent Miner's first full WHL campaign was a memorable one. He finished third in the WHL with a 1.98 goals-against-average and a .924 save percentage. He finished with an overall record of 24-5-1-1 and three shutouts. He then went 4-2 in the playoffs. In 41 career WHL games, Miner has posted an overall record of 27-9-1-1 with a 2.42 goals-against-average and a .914 save percentage.
"We couldn't be happier to see Trent Miner's hard work pay off today. He played a big part in our success this season and we are thrilled for him and his family that they get to celebrate this great accomplishment together," said Giants General Manager Barclay Parneta.
Giants Head Coach Michael Dycka adds, "Trent Miner has a very bright future in this game. He gave us a chance to win every time he took to the crease. He's a hard worker both on the ice and in the classroom and we are very excited to see what his future holds with the Colorado Avalanche."
NOTES:
- Trent Miner is the third Giant ever selected by the Colorado Avalanche. The others were Bowen Byram (2019) and Mason Geertsen (2013).
- Miner was the 32nd Giant ever selected to the NHL.
- Only two goaltenders have ever been selected by the Giants in Round 1 of the WHL Bantam Draft: Trent Miner (2016) and Tyson Sexsmith (2004).
- Never before have the Vancouver Giants had two players selected by the same team within the same WHL Bantam Draft until this year.
FURTHER QUOTES:
"Trent is a world-class Goaltender, a great friend and I am very grateful to have been able to share the crease with him over the last couple of years. The Colorado Avalanche are getting a great individual." - David Tendeck (Trent Miner's teammate an goaltending partner)
"Trent is a mature, calm individual who is not only an excellent goalie but an even better person and teammate. He has made the most of his role here and has used his time to learn and to develop his skills. His relaxed and easy-going style instills confidence and acceptance from his teammates." - Daryl Anning (Giants Scouting Director)
"Trent Miner is an athletic goalie whose game relies on exceptional positioning and good reflexes. He's nearly unflappable. He doesn't play any different regardless of the score. He can shut a game down even after giving up a goal. He has all the tools to become a quality professional netminder." - Aynsley Scott (Sportsnet 650)
"What impresses me most about Trent Miner is his poise and positional play. You forget that he's just 17-years-old. He commands the crease like a veteran." - Fraser Rodgers (Prince George Cougars play-by-play broadcaster)
"Trent Miner is one of my personal favourite goaltenders of this draft class. He's listed at a modest 6-foot-1, but is perhaps the top puck-tracking goaltender available this year. He is very consistent in the way he closes down on pucks and is rarely pulled out of the frame of the net as a result. This allows him to play a bit more conservatively and deeper in his crease than some may expect." - Greg Balloch (InGoal Magazine)
