Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release
Macon, Ga. â Steve Lajoie had a goal and an assist for Winston-Salem but it was not enough as the Macon Trax defeated the Winston-Salem Polar Twins 3-2 at the Macon Centreplex Tuesday night. Steve Zoryk lead the way for the Trax with two goals on the night.
Nathan Grobins got the call in net for Winston-Salem for the sixth time this season but could not make up for the lack of scoring by the Polar Twins.
"Nathan played an incredible game in net, despite the outcome." said Polar Twins Head Coach Bryan Wells of Grobins.
Zoryk's first goal of the game came only 49 seconds into the first period. Edan Welch found Zoryk in front of the net who drilled the puck past Grobins for his seventh goal of the season. Zoryk then put Macon up 2-0 at the 2:57 mark of the first frame, taking a Winston-Salem turnover into the slot and beating Grobins for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Following an uneventful second period, Steve Lajoie opened the third with his second goal of the season to bring the Polar Twins within one at 2-1. Bill Cass kept the puck in at the blue line for Lajoie who made a nice move in front of Macon netminder Mark Cairns for the score at the 1:10 mark of the frame.
Zoryk though he had the hat trick later in the third on the power play, but the goal was disallowed due to being redirected by a high stick. It was the first of two goals waived off on the night, as Winston-Salem also had a tally disallowed later in the period.
Art Mnatsakanov tallied a power play goal at 7:22 of the third for his first of the season to regain the two goal lead for Macon at 3-1. John Gurskis was credited with his second assist of the night on the play.
"We took a few bad penalties in the third which cost us," said Wells. "We kept at them but we simply ran out of gas in the end."
Shaun Aebig put the Polar Twins back into the game at the 17:16 mark of the third with his fourth of the season but it would not be enough as the Trax held on for their first home win of the season. Winston-Salem falls to 3-7, while Macon improves to 3-5.
The Polar Twins continue their road trip on Wednesday in Asheville beginning at 7:35 p.m. Thanksgiving Day the boys head to Huntsville for a date with the Havoc at 7:30 p.m. Central Standard Time. Before returning home, the Twins also make a stop in Knoxville Saturday night for a 7:30 p.m. start.
