Trax Finally Solve Jacksonville

January 16, 2004 - SPHL (SPHL)
Macon Trax News Release

[Macon Ga.]—Before tonight the Trax couldn't solve the Barracudas. The first six meetings were all wins for Jacksonville. Tonight the tide turned as Macon skated away with a decisive 5-2 victory.

Craig Miller led the way tonight with two goals, including the game winner, and one assist. With his parents in the crowd, the Fredericton, N.B., Can. native excited the crowd.

It was an all around sixty minute performance for the Trax. It was great to see according to Head Coach Timmy Stewart.

"We finally played a full game versus Jacksonville." said Stewart, "With the monkey off our back hopefully the boys can keep the momentum going."

Along with Miller, Steve Zoryk also found the back of the net. The Trax assistant captain opened up the scoring with his 20th goal of the season. The goal came just 10 seconds into a power play, a new team record.

Darwin Murray ripped a slap shot from the point for his second goal of the season to extend the Trax lead to two goals. With a 2-0 at the end of the first period, it was the first time all season the Trax went into the locker room with a lead against the Barracudas.

Justin Hellegards cut the lead to one, just past the halfway mark in the game. Late in the second and early in the third, the Trax got back on the roll when Miller lit the lamp twice.

Jacksonville's John McCabe brought the ‘Cudas within two goals when he scored his seventh goal of the season. In his first game back from injury, Edan Welch brought the crowd back to their feet as he iced the game with his seventh goal.

The final ten minutes got scrappy. With the scoring finished the fans got treated to two good fights. At the 15:43 mark, Ryan Rivard and Justin Hellegards dropped the gloves. The two were called for coincidental minor penalties two minutes earlier. While they were in the box, the two tough guys exchanged words and as soon as they stepped on the ice, they settled their differences.

With just 91 seconds remaining, Andrew Katzberg and Andrew Oke dropped the gloves, the helmets, the jerseys, and a few punches. The fans roared as the Trax did not back down, despite beating the Trax where it counts, on the scoreboard.

The Trax return to home ice for two more games this weekend. Saturday, Jan. 17 is "Boeing Military Night" as Jacksonville stays in town at 7:35 pm. Sunday the Trax complete the six game home stand when Alabama comes calling. It is "Blowout Sunday" at the Centreplex where all upper deck seats are five dollars.
