Miami Manatees News Release
Miami â The Manatees got a goal in each period to knock off the visiting Alabama Slammers by 3-1. With the win, the Manatees extend their WHA2 best home-winning record to 8-1-1.
In the first period, Greg LeColst scored his fifth point in three games when he slammed home a rebound from an Oak Hewer shot past Alabama's Fred Beaubien.
Late in the second period, the Slammers Stephane Desjardin got ejected from the game for a spearing incident, giving the Manatees a five-minute power-play. Newcomer Tom Kotsopoulos scored in his first game as a Manatee, taking a cross-ice pass from Bob Clouston at the right circle. His low shot put the Manatees up 2-0 as the second period ended.
The Slammers pulled the game to within one in the third period, when Jeff Mead beat Mark Gowan at 7:35. But as the game wound down and the Slammers net empty, Oak Hewer carried the puck into the Slammers zone. Kevin Swider was trailing, and Hewer unselfishly dropped it back for Swider's empty-net goal at 19:43.
Mark Gowan made 30 saves, some of them stellar, in the win. Beaubien stopped 28 of 30 shots in the loss.
The Manatees will have a guaranteed win night on Saturday. If the Manatees should lose to the Loggerheads, all fans in attendance will get free admission to the 5:00pm game on Sunday.
The Miami Manatees face off against the Alabama Slammers, Jacksonville Barracudas, Lakeland Loggerheads, Macon Trax, and Orlando Seals in the WHA2's inaugural season. All games are broadcast on www.irn.fm.
Individual and Group Tickets for the Miami Manatees are now on sale. For further information, please contact the Manatees at (305) 536-PUCK (7825) or visit www.miamimanatees.com.
