The RockHounds had the "perfect finish" all set up, but it was not to be, as the Arkansas Travelers denied a ninth-inning rally to claim a 5-3 victory on the Fourth of July at Security Bank Ballpark.
Trailing, 5-3, going into their last at-bat, the RockHounds loaded the bases on a one-out single from Wade Kirkland, a (very rare) error by Travs shortstop Eric Stamets and a walk to Jaycob Brugman. Travs closer Greg Mahle got Josh Whitaker to foul out to first base and Renato Nuñez to ground into a game-ending fielder's choice. The crowd of 7,028 then settled in for Independence Day fireworks after the close call.
The team that came up with early offense was the victor in all three games of the series (the RockHounds took the first two, 4-0 and 6-2), and it was the Travelers who got on the board in the first inning Saturday night. Brian Hernandez's league-leading 53rd RBI put the first run on the board and he scored moments later on the first of two RBI singles from Raywilly Gomez (the Arkansas catcher also drove in the club's final run with a single in the fifth). Blake Gailen provided the final margin of victory with a third-inning double.
Bruce Maxwell drove in a pair of runs for the RockHounds with singles in the second and sixth and Brugman launched a home run (through a strong wind) over the short porch and onto the grass berm in right in the third.
