Arkansas Travelers News Release
MIDLAND, Tex - A powerful offensive attack helped the Arkansas Travelers to their third win in a row, a 10-4 series-opening victory over the Midland RockHounds on Saturday at Security Bank Ballpark. Jett Bandy (8) homered and drove in four while Alex Yarbrough collected four base hits. For the second time on this road trip the Travs banged out 18 base hits with Kaleb Cowart and Mike Bianucci each swatting three hits.
With the game tied at 4-4 from the third inning through the sixth, the Travs' onslaught really didn't begin until the seventh inning when Yarbrough put the go-ahead run on base with a leadoff single then advanced on a walk to Brian Hernandez. Bandy lined a double over first base sending Yarbrough to the plate for a 5-4 lead.
Maikol Gonzalez, who reached base four times with two hits and two walks, laid down a bunt along the third base line for a single with one out in the eighth. Hernandez took a two-out walk in front of Bianucci, who lined an RBI single to right field for a 6-4 lead. Bandy then blasted a high arcing home run through the 25 mile-per-hour winds for his fourth homer in 11 games.
Yarbrough capped the night with a bases-loaded single in the ninth inning to give the Travs double-digit runs for the fifth time in 2014.
The Travs bullpen pieced together the nine innings with Buddy Boshers getting the spot start with Michael Roth a late healthy scratch. Boshers allowed four runs on eight hits in three innings and trailed 4-1 into the third inning.
Yarbrough hit a one-out single in the third off RockHounds starter Sean Murphy, which Hernandez followed with a single to left. Bianucci lined a double to the gap in right field driving in both runners. Then Drew Heid deposited a two-out single to center to tie the game, at 4-4.
Kevin Johnson (1-3) pitched the middle three innings without allowing a run and just three hits. Johnson had double plays turned behind him in the fifth and sixth innings and earned his first win of the year.
Michael Brady had a dominating three inning appearance for his second save. Brady struck out seven of ten batters faced including the last five batters to finish the game.
Time of game was 3:31 and the paid attendance was 6,356.
Roth (6-4, 2.46) is expected to pitch on Sunday against Nate Long (7-3, 3.45) in a matchup Texas League All-Stars at 6:00 p.m.
