Arkansas Travelers News Release
LITTLE ROCK - Three pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the Midland RockHounds extended the Arkansas Travelers' losing streak to four games with a 1-0 victory on Saturday night. Nate Long (8-4) tied for the Texas League lead in wins by throwing 6.2 innings and struck out eight batters to set his season high. The Travs had bases-loaded chances in each of the last two innings, but couldn't muster a run in their 14th shutout loss.
With Michael Roth's promotion to the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday leaving the Travs without their scheduled starting pitcher, four relievers took the hill and held the RockHounds to one run on seven hits.
Michael Brady dealt four effective innings, but fell to 0-2 as the losing pitcher with one run allowed on three hits. Buddy Boshers and David Carpenter each fired two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Cam Bedrosian pitched the ninth inning allowing just a walk.
The lone run was scored by the RockHounds in the third inning by Dusty Coleman, who worked a four pitch leadoff walk from Brady. With one out, Billy Burns hit a bouncer that Brian Hernandez deflected with a dive into right field. Coleman raced into third base while Burns ended up at second with an unusual double. D'Arby Myers hit the next pitch to deep center for a sacrifice fly and a 1-0 Midland lead.
Long kept the Travs from reaching second base until a pair of two-out walks in the fifth inning. He struck out Eric Stamets for the third out. Long left the game with two outs in the seventh inning and Jett Bandy, who had walked, at second base. Frank Gailey got Kaleb Cowart swinging to end the threat.
Gailey issued two more walks and allowed a hard single by Alex Yarbrough in the eighth inning to load the bases, but Jose Flores entered from the bullpen and got Brian Hernandez to end the inning with a grounder to shortstop for a double play.
Then Flores put himself in a jam in the ninth inning with back-to-back walks of Mike Bianucci and Bandy. Pinch hitter Drew Heid bunted for a sacrifice, but Flores initially looked at third base costing him a chance for a force at first. With bases loaded and no outs, Florez then went to work with another strikeout of Cowart. Stamets fouled out to the catcher, and Maikol Gonzalez struck out on three pitchers giving Flores his first save of the season.
Time of game was 3:19 and the paid attendance was 5,191.
The middle game of the three game series is set for 6:10 on Sunday with Nate Smith (4-1, 3.10) pitching for the Travs against Drew Granier (4-4, 3.31).
