Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - Amarillo Sox starting pitcher Travis Lawler did everything right, allowing only three hit in pitching a complete game shutout over the El Paso Diablos and lifted them to a 13-0 victory on Tuesday night in front of 2,014 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.
Lawler (2-2) allowed one hit in the third, seventh and eighth but no others and only walked three batters. El Paso starter Scott Vander Weg (2-2) got the loss, allowing seven runs off nine hits in five innings plus. Van Pope went 3-4 with a homerun and four RBI in the effort.
Amarillo took a first inning lead as Cyle Hankerd walked and went to second on a Lee Cruz single. Van Pope stepped in a drove a hanging slider to left field for a three-run homerun and give the Sox a three-run lead. Chris Nash scored in the second inning on a Kevin Butler RBI single for a 4-0 advantage.
The Sox got back on the board in the fifth inning as Hankerd singled, went to third on an error and scored on a Tim Alberts sacrifice fly for a five-run lead.
In the sixth inning, the Sox brought home eight runs off six singles, two doubles and an error to take a commanding 13-0 lead.
That would be more than enough for Lawler as he allowed only three hits through the game and completed the shutout in the ninth, retiring all three batters he faced to preserve the 13-0 win.
