Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

WICHITA, KS.---The Shreveport-Bossier Captains fell to 1-4 on their current six-game road trip as Wichita Wingnuts starter Nick Singleton (8-0), held the Captains to just two runs as Wichita rolled to a 6-2 victory and Singleton picked up his league-leading eighth win of the year.

Andres Rodriguez's two-run homer to left field was the only run production the Captains could muster against Singleton and Wichita relievers Kendy Batista and Jared Simon. Rodriguez's blast was his fourth of the year and scored Robert Perry to cut Wichita's lead to 4-2 but it was as close as the Captains would get. Wichita added two runs in the seventh off Shreveport-Bossier reliever Mark Haynes and the Captains failed to score with two on and two out in the eighth, then went in order in the ninth.

Wichita center fielder Brent Clevlen went 4-for-4, capping off his night with an RBI triple in the seventh-inning. Number nine hitter, second baseman Jose Duran also went 4-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Seven of Wichita's starting nine had at least one hit off Captains pitching.

Wichita scored first in the bottom of the second when Josh Workman knocked his second home run of the year to left field off Captains starter Aaron Cunningham (1-4). The blast also scored Jorge Delgado, who had reached base on a leadoff single.

Wichita added two more in the fifth. Mike Conroy picked up his first of two hits in the game to start off the inning with a single. Duran then doubled to put men on second and third with no outs. After a Josh Horn fly-out, right fielder Ryan Patterson scored both Conroy and Duran on a double to make it 4-0.

Although Rodriguez's sixth-inning blast would bring the Captains to within two, Clevlen's triple in the seventh, followed by Juan Richardson's RBI single would put Wichita back up by four, the tally they would win by.

Singleton showed why he is the American Association's wins leader, pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out eight and walking just one. Cunningham battled, allowing four runs on ten hits through 5.2 innings and departing with the Captains still in the game, trailing 4-2. He walked one and struck out two.

With the loss, Shreveport-Bossier falls to 15-16, one game under .500 for the first time this year. The Captains have dropped eight of their last 11 and four of their last five. They will look to dependable southpaw Ryan DiPietro (5-1, 3.89) to salvage the final game of the series Wednesday night. DiPietro was handed his first loss of the season in the first game of the road trip at Lincoln. He will face Wingnuts starter Jonathan Ellis (0-2, 6.04). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
