Travis Garcia's Slam Lifts Crabs
May 13, 2010 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Shortstop Travis Garcia crushed a walkoff grand slam to give the Blue Crabs a 6-2 win over the Lancaster Barnstormers on Thursday afternoon. It snapped the Crabs' four game losing streak and prevented a series sweep by the Barnstormers.
The Blue Crabs offense gave RHP Jarrett Santos run support right away, taking 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by third baseman Patrick Osborn. Leftfielder Brian McFall tacked on another run in the fourth when he got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Osborn. Santos lasted five innings and allowed just one run for his second no decision start of the season. His counterpart, RHP Eric Maness also pitched five innings with a no decision.
The Barnstormers tied the game at two in the fifth with an RBI triple by rightfielder Matt Watson, scoring third baseman Aaron Herr who walked two batters earlier.
Lancaster threatened again in the eighth with consecutive one out singles, but right-handed reliever Connor Robertson pitched out of the jam to keep the game tied. Barnstormers' right-handed reliever Tim McNab began the ninth, but was pulled after giving up consecutive singles to leadoff the inning. LHP Tim Hamulak replaced McNab and immediately surrendered a bunt single to rightfielder Richard Giannotti. Giannotti laid the bunt down in between Hamulack and Herr, and neither made a play on it. The defensive miscue loaded the bases for the Blue Crabs. Two batters later, Garcia launched Hamulack's 0-1 pitch over the left field wall to give his team the walkoff victory. Garcia went 3-for-5 and reached base in every at-bat.
Hamulack fell to 1-1, while Blue Crab right-handed closer Jim Ed Warden improved to 2-2 by pitching the top of the ninth.
The Blue Crabs will next be in action Friday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium against the Somerset Patriots in the first of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
