Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Arkansas Travelers topped the Springfield Cardinals, 6-2, before 2,645 fans at Hammons Field on Wednesday night.
The Cardinals (28-28) took the early lead in the top of the first inning, striking against RHP Mike Piazza (W, 2-1). LF Mike O'Neill sparked the frame with a leadoff double placed perfectly inside the right field line. O'Neill moved to third on a deep fly out to center by CF James Ramsey, before darting home on an RBI single from 3B Ruben Gotay to lift Springfield into the early 1-0 lead.
The Travelers (29-27), though, came right back in the top of the second against LHP Nick Greenwood (L, 1-3). With two down, LF Drew Heid doubled to keep the inning alive. CF Travis Witherspoon followed with an RBI single, scoring Heid to tie the game, 1-1.
Arkansas plated another in the top of the fourth, taking their first lead of the game. RF Randal Grichuk led off with a base hit, before racing around one out later on an RBI double from DH Jett Bandy, lifting the Travs into the 2-1 advantage.
The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the fifth, squaring the score with one run. C Cody Stanley doubled to deep left field to start the inning and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from 2B Luis Mateo. O'Neill followed with another double inside the right field line, bringing in Stanley to even the score, 2-2.
The Travs, however, moved right back in front with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth. With one away, three consecutive singles loaded the bases for Arkansas. Facing Heid, Greenwood induced a pop up to shallow left field, but O'Neill couldn't hang on to the catch and then misfired a throw past third base, enabling two runs to come home on the play. RHP Heath Wyatt took over on the mound and retired the subsequent two batters with no further damage, limiting the Travelers to a 4-2 lead.
Arkansas struck for single runs in the eighth and ninth, adding insurance to the advantage. 2B Taylor Lindsey struck with a solo homer in the eighth, before an RBI triple by SS Justin Swift in the ninth accounted for the 6-2 final score in the Travelers victory.
