Rocket City Trash Pandas News Release
PENSACOLA, Florida - In a pitcher's duel, the Rocket City Trash Pandas bullpen couldn't hold the tie and ultimately fell 4-2 to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Tuesday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium in the opener of a six-game series.
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth, the Blue Wahoos put runners on first and third with one out against Sean McLaughlin (L, 1-2). The Rocket City righty got the second out on a line drive to second from Paul McIntosh. But with two outs, Griffin Conine's line drive eluded Trey Cabbage in right, scoring two runs. The relay throw to the infield was array, allowing Conine to come all the way home and give the Blue Wahoos their first lead of the night at 4-1.
Braxton Martinez got a run back in the ninth for the Trash Pandas with a solo home run, his fifth of the season. However, Pensacola closer Eli Villalobos (S, 2) rebounded to finish the game and earn the save.
The night began better than it ended for Rocket City as starter Brett Kerry was sharp early, working around base runners in each of his first two innings.
Kevin Maitan led off the third with a double into the gap in left-center. Two hitters later, Orlando Martinez grounded a single up the middle, scoring Maitan from second with the first run of the night.
Pensacola answered in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from former Trash Pandas infielder Luis Aviles Jr. that scored Conine with the first run for the home team.
That would be the end of Kerry's start. Over 4.0 innings, the Rocket City righty allowed one run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in a no-decision. Pensacola starter George Soriano was also strong, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and eight strikeouts over 6.0 innings to keep the game tied 1-1.
In relief for the Trash Pandas, Jack Dashwood immediately walked another former Rocket City infielder, Ray-Patrick Didder, to start the fifth. But a strong throw from catcher Zach Humphreys caught Didder trying to steal third later in the inning, getting the southpaw through the frame unscathed.
Dashwood kept the Blue Wahoos off the board for the rest of his outing. He finished with 3.0 scoreless frames to keep the game tied 1-1 going to the eighth, where the Blue Wahoos would pull ahead for good.
Maitan went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles as the only Rocket City starter to record a multi-hit game while Martinez went 1-for-3 with a walk and a RBI from the leadoff spot in his return to the Trash Pandas after starting the season with Triple-A Salt Lake.
The Trash Pandas (18-10) and Blue Wahoos (13-15) continue their series on Wednesday night. First pitch at Blue Wahoos stadium is set for 6:35 p.m. Josh Caray will be on the call for 103.9 FM THE UMP and 730 AM SportsRadio.
