Edmonton Trappers News Release

The Edmonton Trappers sent 14 runners to the plate in a 10-run fourth inning and went on to crush the Tucson Sidewinders 17-3 Friday night at TELUS Field. The Trappers also batted around in the sixth inning and scored five more runs in that frame en route to their biggest win of the season. The club set a season-high for runs scored on Friday night and also banged out 21 hits, the highest total of the campaign. The 10-run inning was the clubs biggest of the season, but it fell three runs short of the all-time Trapper record for runs in a single frame. The victory was Edmonton's first of the season against the Sidewinders, who swept a season-opening series in Tucson. That series included a 25-11 Tucson win that saw Edmonton's pitching staff set club records for runs and hits allowed. Edmonton and Tucson will continue this four-game series on Saturday afternoon at TELUS Field. The game begins at 1:35 PM.

Tucson opened the scoring in the second inning with a single run off right-hander Troy Mattes (1-0), who was making his first start of the season for the Trappers on Friday night. Left fielder Doug Devore led off the inning with a single to right field and later scored on a sacrifice fly by pitcher Mike Gosling (1-4). The Trappers came right back in the bottom of the inning with a single run off Gosling. Edwards Guzman led off the inning with an infield single and scored on a two-run double by catcher Randy Knorr. Edmonton's big inning started with Luis Ortiz flying out to right filed. The next nine batters reached base, eight via a hit. Matt Cepicky drove in the first run with a double. He was followed by Knorr, who drove home Valentino Pascucci with the second run of the inning. Mattes followed with an RBI single and Anthony Medrano delivered a grand slam to put the Trappers up 8-1. With two gone in the frame Pascucci reached on an error, which allowed Ortiz to score the eighth run of the frame. Cepicky capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run double down the right field line.

The Trappers sent 10 men to the plate in the sixth inning and scored five more runs on four hits and three walks. The first six batters reached base with Guzman getting things started with a single to center. Pascucci followed with a base hit and Cepicky drew a walk to load the bases for Knorr, who also drew a walk, forcing home Guzman with the first run of the frame. Pinch-hitter Dionys Cesar then delivered a two-run single, plating Pascucci and Cepicky. Knorr scored when Medrano grounded into a fielder's choice and Terrmel Sledge knocked home the 16th run with a sacrifice fly that scored Cesar. The Sidewinders plated two runs in the eighth inning off reliever Bryan Hebson. Devore started the inning with a double and scored on a single by Luis Terrero. With the bases loaded Matt Kida lofted a single into left-center that scored Steve Neal with Tucson's final run. Edmonton rounded out the big night of scoring when pinch-hitter Peter Bergeron opened the eighth inning with a single and later scored on an error by Kida.
