Montreal Alouettes News Release
Speed and intensity already in the mix Sherbooke, June 6, 2010 - The rain falling on Sherbrooke this Sunday in no way slowed down the Alouettes, as they were off to a flying start on the opening day of training camp, presented by CN.
A few hundred fans filled the catwalks at the indoor Centre MultiSport Roland-Dussault to watch the Alouettes' first practices before heading out to the Bishop's University gymnasium, where they had the chance to meet the players, coaches and cheerleaders.
Despite being just a few hours into camp, practice was intense with the Als set to start on a high note. No less than 74 players hit the field on Sunday, hoping to make the cut for the upcoming season.
A notable absence There was one notable absence on Sunday as centre Bryan Chiu announced his retirement after a 13-year career with the Alouettes late Saturday night.
"He has been a great ambassador for the Alouettes both on and off the field as well as a great mentor for me and great leader. He will be in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame one day and there is no doubt in my mind he was one of the best offensive linemen in CFL history", said Paul Lambert, who may take over the snapping duties.
Another Alouette veteran, Ben Cahoon, was glad to see Chiu leave on his terms. "He was a warrior and a great competitor as much during game day as in practices. I was fortunate to go into battle with him every day and I wish him the best. I'm happy he decided to take care of his body," the veteran receiver said.
Back on the field on Monday Training camp will continue on Monday either at Bishop's University's Coulter Field, or indoors at the Centre MultiSport Roland-Dussault, depending on the weather. The team will hold back-to-back practices starting at 7:50 a.m., and fans are invited to attend every practice during camp.
Please note all times are subject to change.
