Montreal Alouettes News Release
Trois-Rivières - Last February, in the opening moments of free agency, the Alouettes repatriated Canadian receiver Hergy Mayala in his hometown. On the second day of camp, he proved the Alouettes' brass that they had acted wisely.
It might have been early on Friday morning when the Alouettes hit the field at Stade Diablos, but that didn't stop the 26-year-old receiver from putting on a show making a few spectacular catches during the first one-on-one drills of camp.
"On the first day, when it started, I was very excited. Today, I felt right at home, and everyone loves playing in front of their family," said Mayala to explain the ease he was displaying on the field.
Playing in front of your loved ones will make him a very popular person when the Alouettes play their home-opener at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium on June 23, as no less than 50 family members have already reached out to him for tickets.
If he keeps up the pace, the young receiver will give them many reasons to be cheerful during Alouettes' games.
He said it
"This is my second camp at the professional level, so there is less nervosity this year. We missed a few days of practice and there is nothing that showed, the players are not showing any rust at all."
- Ethan Makonzo, linebacker
Intra-squad game
With all the schedule shuffling happening to get camp rolling, the team's intra-squad game will take place on Monday, May 23 at 7 pm, at Stade Diablos. A pre-game party will be organized for fans in the parking lot, starting at 4 pm.
Rapid fire
Receiver Warren Newman, who has been receiving advice from former Alouettes Ezra Landry, multiplied the spectacular catches on Friday... Returner Mario Alford seems to be in perfect health after an injury last year. He made some nice runs, caught some balls, which is a great news... Newcomer Cole Spieker made a great catch of over 40 yards, hauling in a Trevor Harris bomb... Offensive Line Coach Luc Brodeur-Jourdain always has a game sheet in his hands, and his group doesn't hesitate to ask for advice or explanations... His offensive line still seems to be tight. Philippe Gagnon, Landon Rice, Chris Schleuger and the others are getting along very well and are multiplying the blocks on a daily basis... Defensive back Jarnor Jones is back in the nest after playing 17 games with the team in 2019. He had great confidence and is happy to be in Trois-Rivières for the camp... Rookie pivot Davis Alexander took some reps under the guidance of quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. He showed a lot of power in his arm, a great demonstration of all his talent... First overall pick in the last CFL Draft, Tyrell Richards made the first interception of camp... Fabian Guerra concluded the day by making a long spectacular catch.
Vernon in the footsteps of great Quebecers
Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. has kept himself busy since coming back to La Belle Province, where has followed the footsteps of many of our great explorers. On top of going to the former towns of Pierre Boucher (for a Boucherville Grizzlis' practice) and Sieur Laviolette (for a Cégep de Trois-Rivières Diablos' practice), the Alouettes pivot also immersed himself in the Cité de Champlain.
