Asheville Tourists News Release
Asheville, NC-- In Game One of the Asheville Tourists and the Savannah Sand Gnats first round playoff series, Asheville defended their home field with an 8-3 victory. The game was interrupted by rain in the bottom of the sixth, which caused a two hour and thirteen minute rain delay.
Champ Stuart gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with a Home Run in the top of the first off Kyle Freeland. The Tourists answered in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own. Correlle Prime tied the game with a sacrifice fly and Jose Briceno made it 3-1 with a two-run double to center.
Freeland settled in and ended up surrendering just two runs through five innings. The Tourists padded their lead in the bottom of the fifth with RBI singles from Ryan McMahon and Briceno.
Troy Neiman worked a scoreless sixth in relief of Freeland and prior to the rain, Asheville went to work off Sand Gnats' reliever Paul Paez in the bottom half.
Emerson Jimenez doubled with one out and promptly scored on Raimel Tapia's RBI single to center. The next batter, David Dahl, clubbed a two-run Home Run to right making it 8-2. After McMahon doubled, the umpires called for the tarp.
Following the rain delay, Savannah managed one in the seventh, but that was it. Dahl finished 3- for-4 and a triple shy of the cycle. Tapia recorded three base hits while Jordan Patterson reached base four times.
The same two teams will face off in Savannah for Game Two on Friday at 7:05pm.
