Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, MD - The Baltimore Orioles have announced their annual minor league awards, honoring the entire coaching staff of the Delmarva Shorebirds. Ryan Minor, Alan Mills, Paco Figueroa and Shawn McGill have all been recognized as recipients of the Cal Ripken Sr. Player Development Award.
The Cal Ripken Sr. Player Development Award is presented to a minor league staff member or members who exemplify the qualities of "The Oriole Way." The Shorebirds staff earned the award because of numerous player development successes.
The Shorebirds produced a franchise-record seven South Atlantic League Midseason All-Stars. The Delmarva staff also coached five recipients of Orioles' organizational monthly awards, in addition to the South Atlantic League batting champion, Chance Sisco.
The coaching staff helped lead the Shorebirds to a 38-31 first half record, the team's best mark before the All-Star Break since 2008. In the month of May, Delmarva went 21-9 with a 2.11 ERA, the best team ERA in all of minor league baseball in that span.
The success on the field led to multiple promotions to the higher levels of the Orioles' minor league system. All-Stars Trey Mancini, Jimmy Yacabonis and Mike Yastrzemski were all promoted at the midseason break. Yastrzemski eventually finished the season at Double-A Bowie with his significant progress and success. Rotation stalwarts Sebastian Vader, Steven Brault and Mitch Horacek moved up to Frederick in the second half. The bullpen success of Dylan Rheault and Jon Keller saw their promotion to Advanced-A as well.
Several former Shorebirds received other awards from the Baltimore Orioles. Christian Walker was named top minor league player of the year, while Tyler Wilson earned top minor league pitcher. Walker started the 2013 season with Delmarva before earning a quick promotion, while Wilson pitched with the Shorebirds briefly in 2012. Mark Blackmar, another 2013 Shorebird, received the Elrod Hendricks Minor League Community Service Award for his work as a member of the Frederick Keys. Blackmar was traded to the Chicago White Sox on August 30th as part of the deal for Alejandro de Aza.
