Tortugas Shut out Cardinals

JUPITER, Fla. - The Palm Beach Cardinals (3-1, 35 - 39) were defeated by the Daytona Tortugas, 2 - 0, in game two of the four game series at Roger Dean Stadium. Daytona scored their both runs on sacrifice flies in the sixth inning. Starting pitcher, Nick Petree, suffered the loss in his first start for Palm Beach this season.

After five scoreless innings, the Tortugas found their stride in the top of the sixth scoring two runs on two hits and a walk. Prior to the sixth, Daytona had just three hits, two in the first inning and the other coming in the third. After back-to-back singles to lead off the sixth, Petree issued his second walk of the game to load the bases for Daytona. After the first sacrifice fly, Petree was replaced on the mound by Josh Lucas.

Lucas threw 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and struck out one. After entering the game, Lucas got out of the sixth inning with Daytona's second sacrifice fly and a groundout to second base.

To keep the Tortugas to just two runs, Palm Beach used two more pitchers in the final inning of the game. Lee Stoppelman started the ninth to record two outs. He allowed one hit and walked one during the 0.2 innings of work. For the final out, Ronnie Shaban stepped to the mound to induce a fly out to center field, leaving runners on the corners for Daytona.

At the plate for Palm Beach, all but one reached base in today's matchup. The Cardinals were walked six times and had four hits, but was unable to get a runner beyond second base. In Palm Beach's last chance, Luke led off the inning with a hit up the middle to center field and moved to second after Derek Gibson was issued a walk. Both runners were stranded to end the game.
