Palm Beach, FL - The last time the Daytona Tortugas (38-35, 1-2) found themselves in the win column, it was in the series finale of a three-game series at home against the Tampa Yankees on June 14th. After a difficult end to the first half and two losses to begin the second half, the Tortugas returned to form with a 2-0 win against the Palm Beach Cardinals (35-39, 3-1). A 1:52 rain delay pushed the start time to just before 3:00 P.M.

LHP Amir Garrett (W, 3-5) got the game off to a great start for Daytona with five shutout innings. He struck out eight and allowed just three hits. He left the game with the score tied at 0-0 but did his part to keep the Cardinals offense at bay.

Offensively, the Tortugas scored both of their runs in the top of the sixth inning on two sacrifice flies. SS Carlton Daal and CF Junior Arias both singled to begin the inning and each moved up when RF Sebastian Elizalde took a walk. With the bases loaded, 1B Robert Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Daal. After a pitching change, 3B Taylor Sparks flied the first pitch he saw from Josh Lucas to deep centerfield and scored Arias. Daal went 3-5 and Arias 3-4 from the top two spots in the lineup. Sparks also has five RBIs in his last three games. The Tortugas put two runners in scoring position in the 1st and 9th innings with no outs but in both instances could not find a run.

Two runs was all Daytona would need as Garrett and the bullpen combined for the four-hit shutout. LHP Joel Bender (H, 8) replaced Garrett for the sixth inning and picked up right where the starter left off. Bender went 2.1 innings and allowed just one baserunner with a walk. RHP El'Hajj Muhammad (H, 6) came in for the final two outs of the eight and RHP Alejandro Chacin (S, 1) got his first save of the year with three outs in the ninth, including two strikeouts.

With the win, the Tortugas are now 4-2 against Palm Beach this season. Daytona continues their series against the Cardinals tomorrow at 6:35 P.M. from Roger Dean Stadium. Fans can listen to the action on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 6:20 P.M.
