Clearwater Threshers News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Rhys Hoskins blasted his third home run in as many days for the Clearwater Threshers, but the Threshers saw their eight-game win streak snapped in a 7-4 loss to the Stone Crabs at Charlotte Sports Park.
Hoskins lifted a three-run shot to left to cut the deficit in half in the fifth inning, but the Threshers (3-1) would be held hitless the rest of the way on Sunday afternoon. Hoskins is 5-for-14 (.357) with six RBIs since joining Clearwater at the start of the second half.
Charlotte (1-3) took a hefty lead early on, pushing home seven runs - all with two outs - in the third inning.
The first two men reached via a single and a walk against Matt Imhof (2-3), before the Threshers lefty induced a strikeout and flyout and was one out away from escaping unscathed.
Kean Wong tied the ballgame with a liner up the middle, and a walk to Willy Adames loaded the bases.
Casey Gillaspie, a 2014 first rounder making his High-A debut on Sunday, cleared the bases with a grand slam to lift Charlotte to a 5-1 lead. Jace Conrad's two-run homer later made it 7-1.
The Threshers bullpen settled things down the rest of the way.
Jesen Therrien entered to induce the final out of the third inning, and gave the Threshers 3.1 scoreless in relief. He scattered a pair of hits and two walks, and struck out three.
Miguel Nunez tossed his fourth-straight scoreless outing, retiring all six men he faced through the seventh and eighth innings. He recorded two strikeouts.
Buddy Borden (8-3) earned the win for Charlotte, despite serving up the three-run shot to Hoskins in the fifth. Taylor Guerrieri started, but did not factor in the decision after four innings of one-run ball.
Clearwater will look to begin a new win streak on Monday, as the Threshers battle the Stone Crabs for game three of the four-game series at 7 p.m. Starters have yet to be announced, but the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:45 p.m.
