Daytona Tortugas News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - The Tortugas lost their tenth straight rubber match, falling Sunday afternoon to the St. Lucie Mets 5-4 in a dozen innings at First Data Field. Twelve frames is the longest game in terms of innings Daytona has played this season.
Daytona didn't record a hit past the eighth inning and finished the game 1-for-20 with runners in scoring position, striking out a season-high 21 times.
After RHP Tommy Bergjans retired the first eight Mets in order, St. Lucie put together three straight two-out base hits, with the final being a Gene Cone two-run double to go up 2-0.
Daytona took their first lead of the game in the sixth. Michael Beltre and Bruce Yari started the inning with back-to-back singles. Then with one away, Taylor Trammell hit a ground-rule double to score Beltre from second and put the Tortugas on the board. Daytona would add two more and go up 3-2 when RHP Joe Cavallaro tossed back-to-back wild pitches, allowing both Yari and Trammell to score with Brantley Bell at the plate.
The Mets took the lead back in the seventh. LHP Ty Boyles allowed back-to-back singles to Jeremy Vasquez and Wuilmer Becerra to start the inning and Quinn Brodey followed that up by dropping a bunt down the third baseline that Boyles fielded, and fired wildly to first, allowing Vasquez to score from second and tie the game. Becerra went first to third on the play and scored on a Dan Rizzie sacrifice fly to go up 4-3.
The Tortugas tied the game up at four when Ibandel Isabel hit the second pitch of the eighth off of LHP Seth Davis over the left field wall for his Florida State League leading 24th homer of the season.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the twelfth when Anthony Domino drove in the placed runner Luis Carpio from second with a walk-off single off of LHP Kevin Canelon.
Daytona and St. Lucie combined to use a dozen pitchers throughout the game. RHP Austin McGeorge (1-1) earns the win in relief. He tossed a perfect top of the eleventh with a pair of strikeouts to strand the placed runner at second. Canelon (0-2) takes the loss, he threw five pitches and gave up the walk-off base hit.
The Tortugas head home to begin a seven game homestand, playing three with Dunedin and four with Jupiter. RHP Tejay Antone (2-2, 4.34) will start the opener for Daytona. RHP Connor Eller (6-3, 2.50) will get the ball for the Blue Jays.
First pitch Monday is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:50 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
