Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Daytona Tortugas belted out 11 hits and a pair of homers for their 9-3 victory against the Clearwater Threshers Thursday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. LHP Wennington Romero earned his seventh victory, moving himself into a tie atop the FSL leaderboard, as the Tortugas avoided their would-be first sweep at The Jack this season.
The Tortugas scored the first run of the game for the first time in the second half, tallying three in the bottom of the first. Randy Ventura and Alberti Chavez started with back-to-back singles, before a Taylor Trammell walk loaded the bases. Tyler Stephenson drove in Ventura with a sacrifice fly to right field to get Daytona on the board, before Bruce Yari followed with a two-run single to give the Tortugas the 3-0 lead.
Clearwater got a run back in the second. After Romero struck out Mickey Moniak to start the inning, he allowed three straight singles, the third being a Jose Gomez run-scoring base hit to left, putting the Threshers on the board.
Daytona got that run back in the home half, as Brantley Bell led off the frame with a solo home run to left field to go up 4-1.
The lead grew to 5-1 with a run in the fourth. Bell reached base on a one-out single, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on a Ventura single.
The teams exchanged runs on errors in the fifth. For the Threshers, Adam Haseley scored from second on a Bell error on a ball off the bat of Grenny Cumana to make it 5-2. Daytona got the run back after Trammell stole third and scored on a Henri Lartigue throwing error in the bottom half.
Clearwater cut the lead in half in the sixth. Brian Mims reached base on a ground-rule double with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch, and came in to score on a Luke Williams single to make it 6-3.
The Tortugas added two more runs in the seventh. Ventura led off the inning with a single and moved to second after Chavez was hit by a pitch. Ventura would come in to score on a run scoring single from Trammell. With runners on the corners, RHP Felix Paulino threw over to first wildly on a pick-off attempt, allowing Chavez to score from third to put Daytona up 8-3.
Ibandel Isabel led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a solo home run, drilled 440 feet to center field, to round out the scoring.
Romero (7-4) took the win, allowing eight hits and two runs (one earned) in five innings. He struck out four and walked one. LHP Bailey Falter (5-3) was handed the loss. He allowed eight hits and six runs (four earned) in five innings.
The Tortugas hit the road for a weekend series with the Florida Fire Frogs in Kissimmee. LHP Scott Moss (7-2, 4.20 ERA) will get the start against Jeremy Walker (2-7, 3.89 ERA) in a rematch from last Saturday, a 5-4 victory in which Moss was victorious.
First pitch Friday is scheduled for 6:31 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:15 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
