Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Tampa Tarpons avoided a sweep with a 2-0 win over the Daytona Tortugas Wednesday morning in 11 innings at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in front of nearly 2,500 students.
The subject of the day was pitching, as RHP Tony Santillan and RHP Michael King matched each other pitch for pitch throughout the game. Santillan tossed eight scoreless-innings, allowing four hits and a walk, while striking out two. King was even batter, tossing 8 2/3 scoreless frames, allowing just three hits and striking out eight. However, neither pitcher would factor in the decision, as the only runs scored came in extras.
After 10 scoreless-frames, the Tarpons would finally get on the board in the top of the 11th against RHP Ryan Hendrix. Francisco Diaz started the inning on second base, per the new MiLB pace of play rules, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and came in to score on a Hoy Jun Park single to right field. After a walk loaded up the bases, Isiah Gilliam drove in Park with a sacrifice fly to center to put the Tarpons up 2-0.
The Tortugas threatened in the bottom half, after Malik Collymore started the inning on second. TJ Friedl followed with a one-out walk to put the tying run on base. But the Tarpons would go back to their bullpen and bring on their closer, RHP David Sosebee. Sosebee, pitching for the second straight day, retired Hector Vargas and Tyler Stephenson for the save.
LHP Trevor Lane (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings, walking two and striking out three.
Hendrix (1-2) was handed the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) in the 11th, while allowing one hit, two walks, and one strikeout. Sosebee picked up his fifth save, retiring the final two hitters of the game.
The loss for Daytona drops their record to 21-11, and their lead to 3 ½ games over the Tarpons in the North Division. The Tortugas now head on the road to Clearwater for an eight-day, seven game road trip that begins Thursday. LHP Scott Moss (3-1, 6.75 ERA) will get the ball in the opener for Daytona.
First pitch Thursday is scheduled for 7:00 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:45 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
NOTES: TJ Friedl has reached base in 22-straight home games, the longest streak in the FSL... Daytona's bullpen had gone 14 innings during the homestand without allowing an earned run before Isiah Gilliam's sac fly in the 11th... The loss ends Daytona's seven game winning streak at The Jack... The Tortugas were shut out for the second time this year, both coming against the Tarpons, who have tossed an FSL high five shutouts... Daytona is now 1-4 in extra innings, losing their last four. This was their first extra inning game at The Jack under the new rules.
