Florida Fire Frogs News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Lucas Herbert broke a scoreless game with an eighth-inning long ball, and the Florida Fire Frogs left First Data Field with a 1-0 victory over the St. Lucie Mets on Wednesday afternoon. The victory gives the Atlanta Braves Advanced-A affiliate their second consecutive series victory, and first win in a rubber match this season.
Florida (13-20) scattered three hits through the first seven innings against Gabriel Llanes (2-4), but Herbert's (1x3, R, HR, RBI) one-out, solo home run over the wall in left provided the only offense on the day.
Herbert shined behind the plate on Wednesday morning, throwing out all three attempted base stealers by the Mets, who entered the day with the most swipes in the league with 45.
Jeremy Walker worked his second quality start of the season, as the product of Gardner-Webb shut out St. Lucie (13-17) through six frames. The 22-year-old gave up three hits and walked two men, but also picked up a season-high, five strikeouts in the no-decision.
Brett Cumberland (0x4) saw his team-leading, 13-game on-base streak come to a close in the finale against the Mets. The designated hitter reached on a fielder's choice in the first, but grounded out in the fourth, flew out to left in the seventh, and popped out to third in the eighth.
The Fire Frogs bullpen turned to Thomas Burrows (2-1) to work the seventh and eighth innings. The former Crimson Tide allowed two hits in his two scoreless frames. Justin Kelly (SV, 1) took the ninth and worked a perfect frame for his first save of 2018.
Florida heads over to George M. Steinbrenner Field to take on the Tampa Tarpons for a three-game series beginning Thursday night. LHP Tucker Davidson (0-4, 7.43) toes the rubber in the opener for the Fire Frogs, while it is not yet known who will face off against the lefty for the Tarpons. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with coverage starting at 6:15 p.m. on the Florida Fire Frogs Broadcasting Network.
Florida returns to Osceola County Stadium for a seven-game homestand beginning Monday, May 14 with a four-game series against the Mets, and a three-game weekend set against the Clearwater Threshers.
