Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Laredo - Jose Torres hit a grand slam in the top of the 16th inning to send the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings to a 7-3 victory over the Laredo Broncos tonight at Veterans Field.

The Broncos are now losers of 11-in-a-row.

Lunay Sanchez (0-1), who started the game at catcher and also played at second base later in the game, pitched the final four innings. Rico Santana led off the top of the 16th inning with a four-pitch walk. Brian Nichols followed with a single, moving Santana to third. Nichols stole second. One out later, Welinson Baez was intentionally walked and Torres hit his first home run as a WhiteWing to make it 7-3.

That made a winner of Julio Santana (1-1), who pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Juan Diaz, who pitched five and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief of starter Carlos Artiles.

The Broncos (21-44) struck against Artiles right away. Luis Ugueto led off the bottom of the first with a walk and Juan Senreiso singled. One out later, Argelis Nunez hit an RBI-single to make it 1-0.

The WhiteWings (30-35) responded against Gustavo Vasquez in the top of the second. Juan Melo led off with a double. Two outs later, Juan Cabrera hit an RBI-single. Sandy DeLeon followed with a single down the left field line that moved Cabrera to score. Senreiso slipped, however, allowing the ball to get by him and letting Cabrera score while DeLeon moved to second. Agustin Septimo then hit an RBI-single to make it 3-1.

That was it against Vasquez, who retired 16 of the final 17 batters he faced. He scattered six hits in seven innings while striking out two and not walking anyone.

The Broncos got one back in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Andres Santos hit a grounder towards short that Joaquin Rodriguez couldn't handle. Jaime Morales followed with a blooper into shallow left-center field that Rodriguez tried to grab with an over-the- shoulder catch, but he couldn't hold on. Derek Beckman followed by hitting a grounder under the glove of Septimo to score Santos, making it 3-2.

The Broncos tied it in the bottom of the eighth. Mario Mendez led off with a single, and moved to third because of a pair of wild pitches. Sanchez hit a one-out RBI-single to make it 3-3.

That was it for Artiles, who scattered seven hits and one walk while striking out two.

The WhiteWings and Broncos play game two of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:35 at Veterans Field. Right-hander Reymond Cruz (5-5) is expected to face left-hander Aaron Jenkins (0-0).

The WhiteWings are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas. In its fourth season, the United League is in the midst of a great summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Coastal Bend, Laredo, Harlingen and San Angelo.
