Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - Matt Torra was stellar over seven innings as the BayBears held off the Montgomery Biscuits on Sunday night at Hank Aaron Stadium, 5-2, to even their series at two games apiece.
Torra (10-13) became the second hurler for the BayBears (66-73, 29-40) to reach double digits in victories as he punched out six over his seven frames. He surrendered a couple runs on six hits.
Torra was given a lead to work with in the third as the BayBears took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Biscuits (64-74, 31-37). With one out, Eli Rumler hit a tailor-made double play ball to Brandon Chaves at short, but he booted it, allowing runners to reach first and second. After a walk and a fielder's choice groundout, Pedro Ciriaco provided the big knock of the night with a three-run double down the left field line.
Montgomery attempted to chip away at Torra as J.T. Hall blasted a home run in the fifth inning to put the Biscuits on the board. Jason Bowers also went yard in the seventh against Torra to draw the visitors within a run.
Alex Torres (0-2) was hoping to see his squad battle back to take him off the hook for the loss as he coughed up just three unearned runs over 4.2 innings. Torres didn't get that wish however as the BayBears tossed a pair of runs up in the bottom of the seventh against Angel Castro.
With one out and one on, Rumler doubled off the fence in left to move Matt Tupman to third. Frey was walked intentionally to get to Hallberg who smashed a single to right to score Tupman. Rumler came home when Ricardo Sosa was walked by Jose Mejias.
Daniel Stange was very sharp during his inning of relief as he tossed a perfect eighth while fanning a pair. Reid Mahon (S, 3) closed the door in the ninth with a scoreless frame.
The Mobile BayBears have sent 100 players to the major leagues. They'll play their final contest of the 2009 season on Monday night at 6:05 with Barry Enright (10-9, 3.96) getting the start. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
