Jaxx Blanked by Smokies and Ousted from Playoff Contention

JACKSON, TENN. (SEPTEMBER 6, 2009) - The Smokies (38-31) eliminate the Diamond Jaxx (35-34) from playoff contention with a 7-0 blanking of the Jaxx on Sunday afternoon. Hung-Wen Chen (8-11) shutout the Jaxx through seven innings on just three hits and earned the victory. Jim Adduci hit a homerun and drove in four in the playoff clincher for the Smokies. Aducci finished the game 2-for-4. Steve Bray (7-8) allowed a season high six earned runs and took the loss for the Jaxx, in his final start of 2009.

Tennessee dented the scoreboard first Sunday with a run in the top of the second inning. 19 year old shortstop for the Smokies, Starlin Castro tripled home Blake Lalli from first base. The Smokies took the early lead, 1-0.

The Smokies touched up Jaxx starter, Steve Bray (7-8) with two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Jim Adduci blasted a two-run homerun, putting the Smokies on top, 3-0. The homer was the 12th given up by Bray this season.

Brandon Guyer connected for his second knock of the game in the top of the eighth inning, plating Russ Canzler with a single. The RBI from Guyer put the Smokies up 4-0. Jim Adduci drove in Jonathan Mota and Brandon Guyer with a two RBI single. Adduci picked up four RBI in the game for Tennessee. Tyler Colvin smacked an RBI single scoring Jim Adduci, pushing the Smokies lead to 7-0.

Steve Bray left the game after seven plus innings on the mound and surrendered a season high six earned runs on eight hits. Bray struck out five and walked no one.

Hung-Wen Chen (8-11) posted his best start of the season, working seven shutout innings and picking up the win. Chen struck out six and walked two in the outing. Marcos Mateo and Jason Ruhlman worked a scoreless eighth and ninth inning for the Smokies.

In the Jaxx final game of the season on Monday LHP Nick Hill (5-6, 3.10) takes the mound for the Diamond Jaxx. Opposing Hill for the playoff bound Smokies will be RHP Casey Coleman (14-6, 3.64).
