Austin Spurs News Release

AUSTIN, Texas, October 12, 2005 - Dennis Johnson, 13-year NBA veteran and head coach of the Austin Toros, will conduct open tryouts Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 2:30 p.m. on October 15 at HoopZone, 826 Rutland Dr. in Austin.

"Local tryouts provide a great opportunity for players, especially in our community, to showcase their talents in a competitive atmosphere," said Johnson. "Although I am excited about local player tryouts, I am equally excited to being back out there on the basketball court. This experience will give me a great opportunity to see first hand the talented pool of players in the Austin basketball community."

The Toros' open tryouts will feature one session on Oct. 15 and another session on Oct. 16. The Saturday session will begin at 2:30 p.m. with registration and check-in and conclude by 7 p.m. At the conclusion of the first session, Johnson will select up to 25 players to participate in Sunday's session scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at HoopZone.

Open tryouts offer local athletes an opportunity to showcase their talents in front of D-League coaches and scouts while they compete to earn a position in the team's official training camp. Training camp is scheduled to begin on November 5.

Applicants must be at least 20 years of age and may pre-register by submitting the official registration, disclosure, and release forms, along with a $125 nonrefundable fee by 5 p.m. on Oct. 12. Money orders and cashiers checks are the only accepted forms of payment for the registration fee. Applications are available at www.austintoros.com or the Austin Toros office located at 301 Congress Ave., Austin, TX 78701.

Tryouts will be limited to the first 125 players to register and no incomplete registrations will be accepted. All applications received after the pre-registration deadline will be subject to a $150 nonrefundable fee.

"There is a wealth of basketball talent right here in Austin and throughout Central Texas. I know Coach Johnson is looking forward to evaluating the skills of these players and to share his knowledge of the game. Every player in our league has NBA aspirations and I know the tryout participants are no different. We look forward to a great turnout."

The Austin Toros' inaugural home opener is Saturday, Nov. 26 against the Fayetteville Patriots at 7:30 pm at the Austin Convention Center. The regular season tips off Friday, Nov. 25 against the Arkansas RimRockers in Little Rock. For ticket information, log on to austintoros.com or call the Toros ticket office at (512) 236-8333.
