Toronto FC News Release
Toronto Football Club announced the departure today of Kevin Payne from his post as President and General Manager of the club.
The team also announced, that out of consideration for season seat holders, renewals for 2014 TFC season seats would be delayed from later this month until January, 2014 to give supporters proper time to evaluate the team's off-season moves and progress before committing.
"I have a great deal of respect for Kevin and thank him for his contributions with TFC, but he and I have mutually agreed that the team will be moving in a different direction as we prepare for the 2014 season," said Tim Leiweke, President & CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. "Kevin and I both share a passion for MLS soccer and he will play a role in the transition as we work to put the best team on the pitch for our supporters. By delaying the season seat holder renewal process until January, we want to show our supporters that they do come first to us. I know the turnover has been frustrating to them, but my goal with every move we make this off-season is to return the tremendous support that they have shown this team."
Payne joined Toronto FC after 17 seasons with D.C. United where the club won 12 domestic and international championships, including four MLS Cups Championships.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Toronto and with TFC," said Kevin Payne. "This is a great city and the team's supporters are terrific. I'm proud of the foundation we have built and am confident the team is well positioned for significant improvement. I understand, though, that Tim wants to move forward in a certain way, and it's best for all if we part ways. My departure is amicable, and I continue to have great respect and affection for MLSE and everyone at TFC".
